4 reasonable accommodation tips for employees with ADHD

If you are a worker living with ADHD, you might already know that staying focused, managing time or completing projects can sometimes feel more difficult than it should. These challenges are real, but they do not mean you have to struggle alone.

Under employment laws like the Americans with Disabilities Act, you have the right to request reasonable accommodations that support your ability to do your job well. Below are four tips to consider when thinking about what accommodations might work for you.

1. Ask for a quiet space or tools that reduce distractions

Many workers with ADHD find it hard to stay focused in noisy or busy environments. You can ask for a quieter workspace, the option to wear noise-canceling headphones or permission to work during less active hours. You might also ask your employer to help reduce visual clutter or allow you to block out quiet time on your calendar for deep-focus work.

2. Break down large projects into smaller steps

It is common to feel overwhelmed by long or complicated tasks. If this sounds familiar, you can request that your manager help you divide projects into smaller, more manageable parts. Asking for short deadlines instead of one long one or requesting written steps for each phase of a task may help you stay on track and reduce stress.

3. Request support for time and task management

If you have trouble keeping track of time or remembering tasks, there are simple tools and strategies you can ask to use. These might include calendar apps, written reminders or regular check-ins with a supervisor. You can also request written follow-ups after meetings or a task list that shows what needs to be done and when.

4. Ask for flexibility in how you complete your work

Everyone works a little differently, and that is okay. You might focus better when switching between different tasks or taking short movement breaks. Some people benefit from working alongside a supportive coworker on similar tasks. These types of changes are reasonable to request and can make your day feel more manageable.

If you are not sure how to ask for accommodations or if your request has been denied, seeking legal guidance can be helpful.
